The history of Women's Day dates back to 1909 in New York, USA, when 15,000 women marched for shorter work hours, better pay, and voting rights. The protest sparked the idea for an annual Women's Day, proposed by German socialist Luise Zietz, Clara Zetkin, and other activists. The idea quickly gained support from delegates in 17 countries. On March 19, 1911, the first International Women's Day was officially observed, with over a million people across Europe rallying for women's rights.
In 1917, International Women’s Day had a major impact in Russia when women in St. Petersburg went on strike for “Bread and Peace,” demanding an end to World War I, czarism, and food shortages. This powerful movement played a key role in the Russian Revolution and led to women being granted the right to vote in Russia. After discussions, it was decided that March 8 would become the official day for IWD, and it has remained the global date ever since.
Since then, International Women’s Day has evolved into a global movement celebrated in many countries. While progress has been made, the fight for gender equality continues. The United Nations officially recognized IWD in 1975, and today, the day is marked by rallies, corporate events, and educational campaigns worldwide. Whether it’s through political activism, business conferences, or simply honoring women with flowers and gifts, International Women’s Day history shows us that every effort counts.
